A Chicago family is mourning and at the same time searching for answers after their loved one, Javion Magee, 21, passed away in North Carolina from an apparent hanging.

Javion’s alleged cousin shared a TikTok video where she explained how their family found out about his passing after he was found hanging from a tree in Henderson, NC.

According to the cousin, the police informed the family that Javion, a truck driver, allegedly went to Walmart and purchased a rope and hung him self. The cousin also claims the police department has been giving the family issues, including viewing and identifying the body.

The TikTok has since gone viral on social media, prompting a response from the Vance County Sheriff, Curtis R. Brame, who told the media that they haven’t officially ruled it as suicide, but he doesn’t believe it was a lynching either.

“I understand there’s over 1,000 hits on TikTok (accusing) the sheriff’s office of not being transparent, not providing information to the family and that is not true,” Sheriff Brame told ABC 11.

“There’s been information put out there that there’s a lynching in Vance County. There is not a lynching in Vance County. The young man was not dangling from a tree. He was not swinging from a tree. The rope was wrapped around his neck. It was not a noose. There was not a knot in the rope, so therefore, it was not a lynching here in Vance County,” the Sheriff added.

Javion’s family has since released a statement in response, questioning why the Sheriff is backtracking on the details he initially shared with them.

A spokesperson for Magee’s family, Candice Matthews, in a statement to The Tribe said, “How can you say that it was a suicide? We have not even had autopsy report. We haven’t had a full investigation.”

“Now that all of this is out and we’re amplifying the issue, now, all of a sudden, the sheriff has put out a statement and isn’t saying that it is a suicide. Now he’s saying if anyone knows anything to reach out to Crime Stoppers hotline. We’re not going to play this game, sir. So what would make this man hang himself? And how he was hung, it was no way that he could have done that himself.”
