Freddie Owens Is Set To Be Executed By Lethal Injection Today, Despite His Friend Who Testified Against Him Admitting He Lied To Save Himself
Freddie Owens who was found guilty of murder is set to die today by lethal injection at 6PM despite the friend whose testimony aided in Owens’ imprisonment, saying he lied to save himself.
Freddie was found guilty of killing 41-year-old Irene Grainger Graves, who was shot in the head at the convenience store where she worked during a Halloween night robbery in 1997.
At the time, a surveillance video in the store captured the incident, but it didn’t show the shooting clearly. Then, Steven Golden, a supposed friend of Owens testified that it was Owens who killed Irene.

In a dramatic twist of events, Golden attempted to stop the South Carolina prison from carrying out the execution. This past Wednesday, he claimed Owens was never at the scene, but he blamed Owens out of fear that the real shooters would kill him if he told the truth.
“I am still afraid of that. But Freddie was not there. I don’t want Freddie to be executed for something he didn’t do,” Steven Golden wrote in his statement.
However, prosecutors aren’t buying it. According to them, it’s not just Golden who identified Owens as the shooter. Other alleged friends claim Owens bragged about the shooting to them. Also, an ex-girlfriend of Owens says he confessed to the killing.
A group called South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty presented a petition with more than 10,000 signatures to Gov. Henry McMaster’s office asking him to reduce Owens’ sentence to life in prison.
Freddie’s last chance to avoid death is for McMaster to commute his sentence to life in prison. McMaster said he will announce his decision minutes before the lethal injection begins. This would be South Carolina’s first execution in 13 years.
