R. Kelly wants to be a free man again. The disgraced R&B star wants his sexual convictions thrown out after being found guilty of several crimes including possession of child porn and inducing minors to have sex.

Although the singer is no longer claiming he’s innocent, he says the crimes happened so long ago that they should be barred by the statute of limitations.

He has petitioned the United States Supreme Court to have the case overturned, per TMZ. Unfortunately for the 57-year-old, prosecutors based their case around a 2003 law called the “protect act” which made the statute of limitations indefinite for child sex crimes.

Notwithstanding, Robert’s lawyer Jennifer Bonjean, is arguing that his crimes were committed before 2003, and that Congress didn’t include a clause allowing the law to be applied to alleged conduct committed before 2003, only after.

We gathered that the Supreme Court will decide whether to hear the appeal in the coming months.

The Chicago native was convicted of six of 13 counts back in 2020: three for child pornography and three for inducement counts. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He was also found guilty of making videos of himself sexually assaulting his 14-year-old goddaughter, which resulted in another three charges for producing s*x tapes with a minor.

The “Same Girl” hitmaker was sentenced to 20 years behind bars by a Chicago judge. The judge however, ruled that all but one year would be served concurrent to the 30-year sentence he’s currently serving in New York on racketeering charges.
