Karmelo Anthony Granted House Arrest After Bond Was Reduced From $1M To $250K

Karmelo Anthony who was charged in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas, track meet has had his bond reduced on Monday and was released on house arrest.

A Collin County judge has reduced the bond for the 17-year-old from $1 million to $250,000, and his family has posted bond.

According to reports, Anthony will be placed under house arrest with an ankle monitor, confined to his parents’ home. The teen did not make any statements following his release. The unfortunate incident happened on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium, where witnesses reported a dispute between Anthony and Metcalf over seating under a team tent.

The fight escalated when Metcalf attempted to move Anthony, leading to Anthony allegedly stabbing Metcalf once in the chest with a knife from his backpack, per police affidavits.

Anthony was arrested at the scene and reportedly asked officers if his actions would be considered self-defense.

Anthony’s father testified during the bond hearing that his son is an honor student and captain of both the football and track teams. The defense also mentioned Anthony’s lack of criminal history and argued that the $1 million bond was excessive.

Although prosecutors referenced a prior school-related incident involving Anthony, they did not present additional witnesses.

The teenager’s legal team, including civil rights attorneys Kim Cole and Billy Clark, has raised over $400,000 through a GiveSendGo fundraiser to support his defense. The funds are intended for legal expenses, as Anthony’s father is currently on leave from work.

According to District Attorney, Greg Willis, Anthony will not face the death penalty or life without parole if convicted due to his age.
