The rivalry began during the The 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament where the two basketball stars, Reese representing LSU and Clark representing Iowa, became household names for sports fans with their remarkable performances in the March Madness tournament.

The two faced off in the championship game and Reese’s LSU Tigers won, 102-85. However, during the final moments of the game, Angel used Clark’s own taunts towards her, which was highly criticized online. She used Cena’s “you can’t see me” taunt.

Reese was faced with heavy backlash at the time with many referring to her taunts as ‘classless’. This seemed like a double standard as Clark participated in the “disrespectful” trash talk to start.

“Let’s call it what it is. [Clark] did the waving, she did the Cena,” ESPN host Stephen A. Smith said, referring to the “you can’t see me” hand gesture made popular by wrestler John Cena. “She didn’t mind being disrespectful, so why is it that we’re hesitant to bring that up?” the 55 year old added.

Back in February, the 22-year-old said she and Clark can have their rivalry and still be cool after. “I love that we’re able to compete and still be cool after, regardless of the outside noise,” Reese said during an interview with Women’s Health magazine.

“People even say Magic [Johnson] and Larry Bird, that era [of basketball] and how it was. If that’s who we are, then okay, cool. … I think we’re both happy about what’s going on,” she added.
