Gang activities started in Georgia in the mid 1980s, as a result of the crack cocaine epidemic. According to reports, there were an estimated active 78 gangs in Atlanta back in 2003.

At least, 192 gangs were been tracked by Atlanta police in 2015. Fast forward to now that Mexican drug cartels have established Atlanta as a major distribution hub for drugs including methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, and heroin.

The main source of revenue for gang members is drug dealing, which is why there are often equally a high rate of drug trafficking in areas where there are gang activities. Some gangs even form untraditional alliances with one another.

Other ways in which gangs capitalize in Atlanta’s open air drug market are armed robbery and drug robberies.
