ScarLip Addresses Backlash Over The Use Of Hanging Bananas In Her Video

ScarLip has been under fire for the use of hanging bananas in the promo video she shared for her new single “Melanin”. In the clip, she can be seen rapping her lyrics with bananas hanging all around the colorful room.

Not long after she shared the video on her social media pages, fans began blasting her for supposedly portraying Black people as ‘monkeys’.

Just in, the 24-year-old rapper has now addressed the backlash. Taking to her Instagram Story, she wrote: “Now they think I’m calling us monkeys. I just can’t with y’all. I shot this at the museum of ice cream it looked cool nothing deeper than that.”

“Why would I call myself a monkey? Jesus,” the Bronx native added.

But some fans are still adamant that she’s in the wrong for going along with it. “Girl u kno DAMN well that wasn’t the aesthetic for a black woman to be rapping about melanin. U always f*ckin up just go try acting sis,” someone commented.

“All monkey shit aside, why the hanging bananas tho? like whats the theme? the aesthetic? the story behind it?” someone else queried.

Last month, the rapper announced that she would be removing the signature scar that gave her both her stage name and a deeply personal reminder of a traumatic past.

“Guys, I made a decision. I’m going to get my scar removed this week. I scheduled the appointment. I’m nervous, I’m scared, But it’s time to go,” she shared in a video posted around May 10, per BET.
