Ecuadorian soccer player, Jackson Rodríguez, is currently facing heavy backlash following reports that his wife and 5-year-old child were kidnapped during a home invasion, while he allegedly hid under the bed.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday in Guayaquil, one of Ecuador’s most dangerous cities, when men broke into their home in search of the Emelec defender.

A group of armed men busted down Rodríguez’s door looking for him, but when they couldn’t find him, they grabbed his wife and child instead. The 26-year-old soccer player later told the authorities that he was under the bed watching the whole thing unfold.

Fortunately, both his 24-year-old wife and 5-year-old son were rescued safely. They received medical attention following their release and were safe, police commander Pablo Dávila said.

“So the wife and the child pretty much saved his life,” someone commented on the news. “I would’ve yelled out “babe they got us come from up under the bed!” another person wrote.

According to CBS News, the kidnappers demanded $500k for the release of the wife and son but the family refused to pay. Rodriguez is a left back who plays for first division club Emelec.

After police operations late Thursday, officers located the two in the popular neighborhood of “El Fortín” in the northwest part of the city. The area is considered one of the most dangerous, a place where 22 people were massacred in March.

According to multiple reports, Ecuador is going through it right now. A state of emergency was declared across multiple provinces due to rising crime from gangs with names like “Los Freddy Kruegers.
