R&B icon Montell Jordan, is in the news after sharing that Drake’s 2021 track “Papi’s Home” finally helped him recoup his record deal with Def Jam—nearly three decades after releasing his 1995 single “Daddy’s Home.”

Jordan was recently a guest on the ‘We Sound Crazy’ podcast where he described the moment as a “wild surprise,” crediting Drake’s sample for giving his original track a financial second wind.

“The content in the song, with the language and stuff like that, is stuff that’s not on brand for me, but it’s on brand for him,” the singer said. “But it advanced the publishing of the original song more, which allowed me to recoup faster.”

The 56-year-old revealed that the release of Certified Lover Boy triggered the long-awaited financial milestone: “My recoupment of my publishing and royalties finally recouped after [29] years,” he said, per Complex.

Clip from the podcast covering that particular part has since been making rounds on social media, garnering mixed reactions from people.

“The fact that he had zero agency in the matter, benefitted, and is passive aggressive is pretty bad,” someone commented. “Why do it be so hard for people to just say thank you when it comes to Drake? Like god damn,” another person wrote.

He is best known for his 1995 single “This Is How We Do It”, and “Get It On Tonite”, Jordan was the primary male solo artist on Def Jam’s Def Soul imprint until leaving the label in 2003. The singer and songwriter is also known for his 1998 hit single “Let’s Ride” featuring Master P and Silkk the Shocker.

However, Jordan became the worship leader at Victory World Church in Norcross, Georgia, in 2010.
